Window Glass Repair

If you’ve got a broken window glass, the easiest thing to do is call a professional repairman. But if you have the skills and the tools, why not repair the broken glass yourself? Window glass crack repair is a simple DIY project that you can complete in less than a day. Here are some tips.

Use safety goggles and gloves. Goggles will protect your eyes from glass shards that can potentially fly in your direction when the larger part of the glass pane is removed. Gloves, on the other hand, should be used when removing the remaining glass pieces from the window frame. Make sure to prepare these two before proceeding to your window glass repair project.

Lay a drop cloth on the working area. The drop cloth will catch the glass pieces from the window. If you don’t have a drop cloth, you can make do with a newspaper. Make sure to also place a trash bin near the window, so you can immediately dump the shards off.

Clean the frame of shards and old putty. The frame must be thoroughly cleaned for the easy installation of the new glass pane. If the glass has been broken apart, you need to one by one pull out the shards. Sometimes they don’t easily come off so you need to rock them back and forth. The old putty, on the other hand, should be scraped off with a scraper or a chisel. If it’s too hard to remove, apply linseed oil.

Install the new glass carefully. You should put new putty on the corner where the glass will be installed. Cover the entire length. Then put the glass in place, pushing it hard into the putty. The glass might be somewhat heavy to handle alone, so have someone assist you. Best to have someone who has previous window glass repair experience.

Repair your window glass only if you are confident of your skills. If not, better call a window glass repair contractor. Although it will cost you more, you will be assured of a professional service.
